Paradise on earth exists: It
s called Plitvice Lakes National Park, and it should be in every travel bucket list out there. Oh yes.
When I heard about the Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia, I just knew that I had to go there. If you know me or have been paying a little attention to my blog and my Instagram, you may have already noticed that I`m fascinated by water. It is my element, I grew up by a huge lake, have been in boats before I could learn to talk and now live in Barcelona, near the sea. I always felt this strong need to be by the water and it ends up reflecting on my choices of travels: A lot of cities by the water, doesn`t matter if it`s the ocean, a river, or just a lake. I`m naturally attracted to it.
So when I was planning my vacations in Croatia and my friend mentioned Plitvice Lakes National Park, I, always curious as I am, immediately googled it. I like hiking, trekking and mountains, but come to think of Croatia all that came to my mind was getting a tan at a beautiful beach or snorkeling around some island. Then I found something like this…
I went in the summer, and before you get all excited about getting a refreshing plunge in this amazing cristal water, be aware that in this park getting into the water is not allowed as it is a preservation area – disappointing, I know. So if you are not a heat person, better go when the weather is not so warm, since during summer the place also gets really full. The best thing to do is to get there when it opens, early in the morning.
The park is big so you can stay a whole day there, walking between the lakes and waterfalls. There are some restaurants inside, but outside the main path, so it`s good to take a snack with you and some water, there is a lot of walking!
We started from one of the lower lakes and took a boat up. We had a guide with us so he was the one in charge of the route, but the place is well signalised and there is no need for a guide if you go by yourself.
Luckily most of it is plain and there isn`t much climbing. There are trails to follow, so its an overall easy walk. Plitvice Parks are also children and dog friendly, so it`s a good thing to do with your family!
I only had a day to see it and I was coming from Split (not the closest city to leave from) so I bought an day trip with a travel agency. The other way to get to the Plitvice Lakes Park is by car. This was probably the best way but we didn`t have a car at this time so…
There is also the possibility to stay in a hotel inside the National Park area. You still have to buy entrance tickets that have to be renewed if you are staying longer than one day, but this way you can enjoy more of this amazing surroundings.
In the end we lost a lot of time going from and back to Split, so it felt like the time spent at the park was really short. I could surely have stayed more. But even like this, I got some amazing pictures, as you can see. This is the kind of place where no photoshop is ever needed…
